Abstract
This essay will explore Brian Friel’s 1980 play Translations, its inaugural performance, and unique staging in order to discuss how the endeavor impacted Irish identity. By applying the critical lens of moral geography and analyzing key moments in the work, this essay will evaluate how location played an integral role not just in the play itself, but how connections to place and space influence identity and cultural change. Specifically, by reevaluating the 1833 Ordnance Survey of Ireland and superimposing that cultural struggle on to a modern conflict, the Troubles.
