Abstract

This multimodal thesis project presents a collection of stories exploring themes of self-discovery, the complexity of navigating social structures, and perseverance in the face of adversity. The collection follows protagonist Maddie as she faces loss, contemplates her purpose as a young woman in America, and uncovers her love for small business ownership, all while trying to traverse past family trauma. Short chapters and poems explore Maddie’s life, both past and present, while stitch guides reach further into her psyche. The unique format created through stitch guide writing allows for the breaking up of heavier prose, giving room to negotiate the often-messy moments of life and proclivity for cynicism that reposes in Maddie’s conscious. Ultimately, this project is an homage to needlepoint, a beloved pastime that has endured for centuries and experienced a remarkable resurgence over the past five years. Needlepoint grounds its hobbyists: when the world feels chaotic, it provides space to pause, breath, and focus on the meditative act of creating handmade art.
