Abstract

One of Healthy People 2030’s objectives is to increase the proportion of adults screened for colorectal cancer. To address this objective, a quality improvement project was completed within an Ambulatory Surgical Center (ASC). An evidenced-based committee was formed with the primary goal to decrease the number of cancelled colonoscopies. The committee aimed to answer the PICOT question: For patients who cancel their colonoscopy, how does the development and implementation of an evidence-based practice (EBP) committee’s nursing interventions reduce cancelled colonoscopy rates and increase reschedule rates, compared to no implementation of an EBP committee’s nursing interventions, over three months?

Nursing interventions included creating the bowel prep instructions in Spanish and Korean, increased communication between the office staff, central scheduling, and the ASC, and the no-show charge was increased from $50.00 to $100.00. Additionally, the EBP updated bowel prep instructions to include specific information regarding marijuana use and medication holds. Specific dialogue about the nurse's telephone call prior to the procedure was identified and updated to include marijuana use, medication holds and understanding of bowel prep instruction. Education was given to all nurses, certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA), and physicians regarding medication holds. A template for specific information related to the cancellation of procedures was created and submitted to the information technology (IT) specialist. The EBP committee formed and implemented several successful nursing interventions to reduce cancellation of colonoscopies. With the implementation of sustainable interventions, the committee will identify additional needs throughout the ASC and form nursing interventions to address any needs.
