Abstract
The description of black body radiation by Planck was one of the most subtle and impactful discoveries at the beginning of the quantum era. Here we show how it is combined with a few simple ideas from geometry to estimate the mean temperature of the earth. This exercise shows how even though predicting the weather is extremely difficult, predicting globally averaged mean climate is relatively simple.
