Abstract
Systemic racism is an ailment that has plagued the United States since its inception. This research will highlight previous studies on the topic of race relating to discriminatory policing and injustices within the criminal justice system. Solutions will be offered as to the best remedies to rid the criminal justice system of inequalities faced by those within minority communities. Over-policing is one tactic used within the criminal justice system that targets minorities. Further, minorities are significantly more likely to receive longer prison sentences than White male counterparts for otherwise similar crimes. This study will also engage recently released prisoners to determine how unfair policing practices landed them in jail and how the title of formerly incarcerated makes their re-entry into society much more difficult. Research will be conducted through statistical departments such as the Department of Justice to give a comprehensive understanding and analysis of statistics and figures relating to unfair prison sentences minorities receive versus White male peers. This research will examine the central research question of how discriminatory policing practices contribute to long-term economic instability within minority communities. Another method used to gain necessary data for this research topic will be interviews. Firsthand knowledge of how individuals have experienced the criminal justice system is important for unbiased conclusions. This data will show that systemic racism is alive and well and there are oppressive systems in place that work to hinder minority progression. This research highlights systemic disparities, informing policy reforms to reduce inequality and improve justice outcomes nationwide.
