Abstract
This thesis investigates contemporary educational systems and transition practices that shape the experiences of individuals, with a range of disabilities, as they move towards adulthood. The central argument contends that despite decades of progress in disability rights, current transition systems often operate with rigid, compliance-driven practices that ignore student voice, limits autonomy and fails to develop meaningful self-advocacy skills. These practices bring a risk of restricting the capacity of students to participate fully in decisions that shape their futures. Drawing on historical research via a disability justice lens and with a focus on transition policy, this study illustrates how outdated assumptions, standardized procedures, systemic ableism influence both educational expectations and real-world opportunities. The review of literature highlights barriers, minimization of lived experience, inconsistent transition planning and the marginalization of families and communities in decision making process. This thesis argues that authentic transition education must be ground in disability justice principles, which affirm intersectional, community care, interdependence, and self-determination. By making the students the leaders in their own transition journey, educators, support professional can cultivate agency, build confidence, empower students to shape futures that align with their strengths, needs, aspirations. You will see the final chapters you would see three-day workshop that is center on Rewriting the Future: Building Self Advocacy Through Disability Justice. This accessible framework seeks to empower not only those individuals with disabilities, but also their families, educators and communities. It takes everyone more equitable and transformative transition experience. As Judith Huemann said, “For we are leaders of inclusiveness and community, of love, equity, and justice”
